A Short Winter's Day

Shortest day.  Winter Solstice.  I've written about it so many times before.  I like these transcendental recurring moments.  Ritual.

They seem to be coming about more quickly, though.

I can't quite get into the Christmas spirit.  We've watched a few movies, "Elf" and "Bad Santa," but last night we watched "Joker."  Now there was a real downer.

I still have to buy presents.  I hate buying presents.  It is not because I am a Grinch; I'm just not good at it.

It is dark and it is Winter and Christmas is just about here.  It's time to have those drinks with friends.

    Winter Solstice
    BY HILDA MORLEY

    A cold night crosses
    our path
    The world appears
    very large, very
    round now extending
    far as the moon does
    It is from
    the moon this cold travels
    It is
the light of the moon that causes
this night reflecting distance in its own
    light so coldly
    (from one side of
    the earth to the other)
It is the length of this coldness
    It is the long distance
    between two points which are
    not in a line now
    not a
    straightness (however
    straight) but a curve only,
silver that is a rock reflecting
    not metal
    but a rock accepting
    distance
    (a scream in silence
    where between the two
    points what touches
is a curve around the world
    (the dance unmoving).

It's interesting. I need to do several readings. I don't know this Hilda. Poems in America at the time she wrote it were interesting. Some of my favorite poets - Weldon Kees, Delmore Schwartz, and the unmatchable Mr. Frank O'Hara were doing it. I guess Ashbery and Mr. Ferlinghetti (Oh I love him too).

Anyway, my intention was not to blather tonight - but I just got home - smoked a little and BOOM Lisa Can't Stop. Everyone is already sleeping - they left Florida at 5:30 this AM and got the to Cape close to 4. But yes - they arrived and it feels like Christmas Has Arrived. Just need my son home.

It's beginning to look a lot like
