Big Cats and Brando

Sitting out on the deck yesterday as light was giving way to darkness, I was watching the little feral cat and wondered, "If we were the same size, would we still be friends?"  I doubted it.  I'm pretty sure she wouldn't take care of me as I do her.  I might just be gone and done with quickly.

Then I moved on to thinking about equivalent things.

My travel/art buddy sent me a link to Time Magzine's 100 Best Books of All Time (link).  I've read most of them and by and large agreed with the selections.  There were a few surprises, but that is to be expected as one expects a surprise.  Mostly, though, I thought about a social media uprising against Time for not including more minority writers.  Cancelled?

Which reminds me--I finished "Tar," but I had to pay for it twice.  Pissed me off, but the rental was for just 48 hours.  Maybe watching it in thirds, I missed something.  Or a lot.  I was confused by the ending.  Not the very ending, but how we got there.  I couldn't remember the suicide Asian girl.  I don't know.  I thought the ending was funny, though,

It is hot here already.  The azaleas are too early blooming.  That's about three weeks early.  My Camelia tree has bloomed as well, but I am not sure of the usual timing on that.  Mosquitoes, though, are already a threat.  There was not enough respite from them this year.  I sprayed Atrazine on the lawn this weekend as a pre-emergent.  That is the timing suggested by the state agricultural webpage--mid-February.  As warm as it is, though, I wonder if I mightn't have done it a week or two earlier.

One cannot be certain in the Time of Climate Change.

I called the doc yesterday wondering what was happening.  I haven't heard from them about the gel shot for my knee.  Insurance, it seems, hasn't approved the shot yet.  Meanwhile, I'm limping badly.

"Makes you look like a badass," said the pretty lady at the gym.

"Yea, I'm trying to turn it into a pimp roll."

"You look kinda scary."

She was grinning.  She was being nice.

Were I a wild animal, I'd have been eaten by now.  Either that or I would have starved to death.  I don't think any big cats would feed me twice daily.

Last night, I watched "One-Eyed Jacks," Marlon Brando's one and only film directorial credit (link).  If you want to know more about my dead ex-friend Brando, you can watch that.  It encapsulates his ethos and creed and life's philosophy, I think.  Watching it last night was like sitting in the room with him once again.  It is a startling film, a cowboy film shot in Carmel on the beach.  The whole Mexican thing, too, was ex-friend Brando.  I don't know how I had never seen the film before, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I don't know if you would, though.  It was released in 1961 and has a different sensibility.  But as always, Brando the Bad One is the hero/villain.  I was surprised, however, when I looked at his filmography.  "The Men" was his first film in 1950.  Then came "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Viva Zapata."  It wasn't until 1953 that he made "The Wild One," which I had always believed began his career.  Actually, his whole filmography rather stunned me.  "The Godfather" and "Last Tango in Paris" came out in the same year?

One thing to remember about Brando, though, is that early on, he was warning of climate change, and was especially concerned about reducing the world's CO2 footprint.

Another is that he is reported by his first wife to have screwed a chicken on their honeymoon.

Or was that my dead ex-friend Brando?

Could have been either.

I woke up late and must now rush to prepare for the cleaning crew.  The house is a mess of audio and photography gear.  It is going to take me forever to clean it all up.  And so. . . let me away.
